Mark Twain affected history because he captured bits of it in his books, and because his books inspired people, and continue to do so.
St. Mark is believed to be the young man who ran away when Jesus was arrested (Mark 14:51-52), and the "John whose other name was Mark" (Acts 12:25). He was a disciple of Saint Peter the Apostle who travelled with him to Rome, and was referred to as "my son Mark" by the first Pope. He also travelled with his cousin Saint Barnabas, and with Saint Paul through Cyprus. He was probably influenced and inspired by all these people as well as by Our Lord.

Life and its absurdities inspired Twain. This was fuelled by his acerbic wit and keen observational skills. He also saw and commented on the tenderer aspects of humanity as a counterpoint to the crass aspects he commented on.
