Booth in his diary writes how he is going to restart the civil war and how the south will consider him a hero. In his own mind he decided to kill Lincoln and if anything inspired him it would be his thinking that he was helping the south keep the war going. After his killing of Lincoln his diary reflects he was surprised about the reaction of people concerning Lincoln's death. The nation, north and south, were upset and they mourned the loss of the president. Booth expected people to help him and hide him, but one would and he found himself alone, hungry, wet, and hiding from the country wide search for him.
