He lead an army of Normans, Bretons, Flemings, and Frenchmen from Paris to victory over the English forces of King Harold Godwinson at The Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror became the first King of England in the House of Normandy. Before William England was ruled by the Saxons. Harold Godwinson was the last Anglo-Saxon king in England.
