Craigslist.org's sole source of revenue is paid job ads in select cities ($75 per ad for the San Francisco Bay Area; $25 per ad for New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, Boston, Seattle, Washington D.C., Chicago and recently Portland, Oregon) and paid broker apartment listings in New York City ($10 per ad).

The classified online website called Craigslist began in 1995. At first the website only included classified ads for San Francisco, California but by 2000 it had expanded to many other cities in the United States.

Story has it that the creator was working on a classified-style website where users would pay a fee and post their ads online. Soon after his wife divorced him and seeing that he did not want to give up his money, he put his funds into the non-profit website that is now Craigslist.

It started as a small network for selling, buying, or trading goods in San Francisco Bay. It was an email based classifieds group that was founded in 1995. In 1996 it became a web based service, and in 2000 reached out to other cities. It now covers almost the entire country. The founder, Craig Newmark, started this to help others with finding, selling, and trading goods.
