I believe the German Siemens & Halske company had something to do with it. they did originate in Europe and were adapted to both landline ( like Western Union) and radiotelegraph service- and are still used in the latter role on ships. Unlike Phone calls or xeroxes, a telex print is a legal document!

Telecommunications is a science, so the answer is nobody. Telecommunications started with the very first species of animals on this earth, as telecommunications is quite simply the act of communicating over a distance from one point to another. Essentially a bird chirping from one tree to another bird in another tree is telecommunications.

The teleprinter was invented by my grandfather, Christopher Frederick Hilton, a Captain in the Royal Signals. When he passed it to his superiors, as required by army regulations, it was hijacked and he only received minimal recognition. He died some years before I was born in 1940. The original drawing is framed at my son's house in Another Country.
