Tobacco has a long history, dating back to the Mayans of Mexico. Tobacco was grown by Native Americans before the Europeans came over to settle colonies. The Native Americans used tobacco for medical purposes and for rituals, using a pipe. Many Europeans chewed it, or smoked it through a pipe. The first commercial cigarette was made in 1865 by Washington Duke in Raleigh, SC. James Bonsack, at eighteen years old, invented the cigarette-making machine in 1881. This machine could make 120,000 cigarettes a day, and later it turned into a factory that dispensed 10 million cigarettes a year.
