The first electronic handwriting device was the telautograph by Elisha Gray in 1888. The first graphic tablet that resembles ones today was invented in 1957 and was called the Stylator. In 1964 the Rand Tablet was introduced and it used a grid of wires under the surface that encoded horizontal and vertical coordinates with a magnetic signal. The stylus would receive the magnetic signal which would be decoded back as coordinates information. Digitizers were made popular in the mid 1970's and early 1980's. They were used as an input device for high end CAD systems and bundled with PCs and PC based CAD software. The first home computer graphic tablet was KoalaPad and was designed by Apple , but it began to support the Commodore 64 and Atari. In 1981 Todd Rundgren created the first color graphic tablet software for personal computers and it was licensed to Apple as the Utopia Graphic Tablet System.
