Pierre Eugene du Simitiere, a Swiss-born American patriot, philosopher, naturalist and portrait painter recommended the motto "E pluribus unum" (or "Out of Many, One") while serving as the artistic consultant for the committees that designed the Great Seal of the United States in 1776. The phrase was eventually adopted as the motto of the US by an Act of Congress in 1782.
