The Chinese had ancient devices that send steams of burning liquid at the enemy. The Greeks had a method of throwing flames or 'Greek Fire' at enemy ships. Flamethrowers were invented by the German engineer Richard Fiedler in 1900, and tested in secret by the imperial German army the following year.
