Gillis Lundgren. He was a Swedish Draughtsman. One day he bought a table which wouldn't fit into his car and so he removed the legs and re-assembled it at home.

He then took the concept to his current employers, Ikea, who then based their company around this concept.

Is custom made furniture better than flat pack furniture why?

It really depends on what you are looking for. Custom made furniture will always be consider as "superior" to flat pack furniture or any other type of ready-to-assemble furniture. To start with, having a piece of furniture that is made specifically for you is much like having a custom made car...it just seems like it has more quality and it's better overall. However, the quality of custom made furniture is not always better, and at times, actually worse. Have in mind that furniture, like IKEA for example, is developed by experts to last long. The designs are usually great as well, since they can spend a lot of money on designers because it's is mass produced and easy to earn those money back. Lastly, at least when it comes to me, the assembly of the flat pack furniture is a big bummer, although the instructions are supposed to be perfect, sometimes people are forced to pay additional charges for furniture assembly services, which makes the price gap between custom made furniture and flat packs almost disappear.
