James Watt did, when he needed to compare the power of his engines to the power a horse could output. 1 hp = 746 w John Sandy John Sandy
The term horsepower was invented by James Watt, who used it to give coal miners an estimate of the power his steam engine could produce in terms of the number of horses it could replace in pulling coal bins.
1500 horsepower
1 horsepower=746watt
1 ton = 12,000 BTUs/hr 12,000 BTUs/hr = 4.715 horsepower (12,000*0.0003929) 4.715x5 = 23.575 So a five ton AC unit is 23.575 horsepower

Inventor and genius James Watt created the concept of horsepower. He was most well known for the improvements to the steam engine.
Any motor regardless of its use was invented to produce more power or to do more work than a person or animal could do. I'm sure that is the start of the term Horsepower. The amount of effort you can get out of 1 horse. An engine can produce hundreds of units of horsepower. Impractical to have 100 horses harnessed together when a small motor can do the same thing.
