In 1971, Jacob Spencer of Nortech Laboratories submitted an application for the nation's first patent involving a flexible gel application for hot and cold therapy. Patent # 3,780,537 was granted in 1973 and the first Reusable Hot / Cold Gel Pack was born.

Snow has been around since water has existed on Earth, when it has been cold enough for water to freeze, and where there has been enough turbulent motion to lift air to condense into clouds. I don't recall at what point in the Early Earth's history the second of these conditions was met, but it would be a few billion years ago.

Ice is a natural liquid process known as freezing. When the temperature goes below 0 degrees centigrade then water will turn from a liquid to a solid.

More than 100,000 years ago some people noticed that the water in the lake had become hard. They didn't call it "ice", but that's what it was.
