In 1888 Friedrich Reinitzer discovered a liquid crystal but the first LCD display was produced in 1964 by George H. Heilmeier. Dr. T. Peter Brody first described the method of switching individual elements (active matrix display) in 1975. There is also another type of display available on the market called PDP - plasma display panel. It was invented in 1964 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign by Donald L. Bitzer, H. Gene Slottow and Robert Willson. Many comparisons of this two display types are available on the Internet.
