ernist mach

2nd Answer:

Well, not quite. Ernst Mach was a well-known Austrian physicist, for sure. About 10 years before faster-than-sound (super - sonic) aircraft were perfected, the issue of supersonic travel was being studied. An aeronautical engineer by the name of Jakob Ackeret proposed that the unit of speed of sound be named after Ernst Mach. And so it was. (Many physical units are named after famous scientists, like Volta, Coulomb, Alex Bell [deciBel] Ohm, Ampere, Hertz, and so on. Units like this are spelled and even abbreviated using a capital initial letter.)

Meanwhile . . . in the 1870s and 1880s, a French scientist by the name of Emile Sarrau was experimenting with the speeds at which various explosions occurred. It was important, as at that time Alfred Nobel , Sarrau, and others were attempting to create more powerful explosions for use in war and quarrying. The outgoing speed of an explosion was a good measure of its power.

Anyway, the French named the speed of sound after Sarrau, and they call it now, the "Sarraut number".

Unlike almost all other units of measure, the Mach number is not absolute, but changes with altitude and pressure. Also unlike conventional measuring units, like "2 inches", "60 mph, "115 lbs", the Mach number comes after the unit, as in, "Mach 1.5", "Mach 3", and so on.
