In 1953, University of Southern California (USC) Professor C.F. "Red" Lombard developed a motorcycle helmet designed to absorb the shock of an impact. The first bike helmets, created in the 1880's by riding clubs, were called the "Pith" helmets. It was the Snell Foundation who promulgated the first bicycle helmet standard in the U.S. in 1970.
