Several individuals developed circuitry that lead up to the Integrated Circuit as we know it today, starting as far back as 1949. The computer chip was developed in the late 1950s by two different researchers working independently of each other.
Jack Kilby (1923- ) developed a chip at Texas Instruments in 1958, using Germanium, and Robert Noyce (1927-1990) invented a similar device at Fairchild Semiconductor in 1959, using Silicon.
Jack Kilby has been recognized with a Noble Prize for his efforts.
The first digital recording device was invented in 1937 by Alec Reeves, but digital recording did not become commonplace until 1982, the year that the first CD player was released.
