Allessandro Volta
As with many inventions there is no simple answer. The electric cell was invented not discovered. The Daniel cell (1836) is possibly the first example of electric cells, these were an improvement on the Leyden jars (1745), independently invented by Kliest and Musschenbroek. These were more like what we would refer to as capacitors. Volta then improved these further to what we would recognised today as a battery. That is, several 'cells' connected together which he referred to as a 'Crown of Cups'.
Paul Gottlieb invented the first electric telescope.

Michael Faraday first invented the electric motor.
The word comes from the name of the scientist Alessandro Volta, who invented the first photo voltaic battery, not Voltaire...he was a writer.
Alessandro Volta (1745-1827) invented the voltaic cell, the first electric battery, in 1800.
The first electric clock was invented by Alexander Bain in 1840.
Garrett Morgan invented The first Electric Stoplight in 1923.

The volt is named for Count Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta, an Italian physicist who invented the first electric cell in 1800.duplicate
