Igor Sikorsky, a Russian- American immigrant invented the first successful helicopter, model number VS-300. There is no specific invention "date" but it was first test flown in September 14, 1939 and had to be tethered by cables because of its instability. The VS-300 was the first to use modern-day rotary blade designs.
