Semaphore towers/semaphore lines were first thought of by Robert Hooke and the idea was submitted to the Royal Society in the UK in 1684 to be used for military purposes. The Royal Society did not implement it though due to concerns that these messages would be easily decoded by enemies. However, it did lead to Frenchman Claude Chappe developing the first visual telegraph system in 1792.
Chappe's design became the most famous semaphore tower design and it used one large crossbar with two "arms" at the end of each side. Codes were deciphered based on the location of the arms and crossbar.
Eventually, semaphores became used in a flag design using two separate flags. These flags were used to spell out messages and could allow multiple signalers to cover long distances of communication very quickly.
Eventually this all led to the design of Morse Code by Samuel Morse and the rest is history.
Morse code is made up of dots and dashes (short and long) to represent each letter of the alphabet ( eg dot dot dot dash dash dash dot dot dot = SOS) made on a tapping machine and transmitted to the recipient who hears the dots and dashes and translates them into language. Semaphore is a visual signal using a flag in each hand and positioning them to create letters for someone who is too far away to hear you, to translate into language.

The original use of semaphore was invented around 1792 by Claude Chappe. The use of semaphore flags was brought about during the 1800's on ships at sea.
It was invented in France. It was popular in the late 18thC
The year 1967.
Semaphore was invented as a visual signaling system to relay messages over long distances. It was developed to communicate with ships at sea or between different points on land where other methods of communication like smoke signals or flags were not practical. Semaphore systems used different flag positions to represent different letters or words and were widely used before the invention of the telegraph.
Semaphore was invented in 1648 by Robert Hooke. The first use was by Claude Chappe in 1792 in France. The system conveyed messages from city to city by relay stations or towers.

It is believed that semaphore was invented in the year 1684 by an English scientist Robert Hooke.By C pascoe 2008 from Bankstown grammar school B)* Added - The first use of semaphore signals for practical use was by Claude Chappe, in France, in 1792. Chappe is acknowledged as the inventor of the semaphore. He developed the system to convey messages from city to city within France by a series of relay stations similar to the way a telegraph was used n later years. Prior to this development, messages could take more than a day to go from point-to-point that could be reached in less than 2 minutes under his system.
there are 28 semaphore flag methods.
