Best Answer

A Stevenson screen or instrument shelter is an enclosure to shield meteorological instruments against precipitation and direct heat radiation from outside sources, while still allowing air to circulate freely around them. It was designed by Thomas Stevenson (1818-1887), a British civil engineer and father of the author Robert Louis Stevenson.

Why are the sides of the 'stevenson screen' louvered?

The sides of a Stevenson screen are louvered to allow air to circulate freely around the temperature and humidity sensors inside. This design helps prevent the sun's direct rays from hitting the sensors and affecting the accuracy of the readings. The louvered sides also help to reduce the impact of thermal radiation on the inside of the screen.
