you have to find the speedo cable on the side of the trans near the rear. unscrew the speedo ring on the cable and pull the cable out of the trans. then remove the small bolt and clamp on the trans right next to where the cable was. this allows you to remove the speedo gear. it may be hard to remove as it has an O-ring sealing it in the trans. on 4x4 I think the cable goes to the transfer case instead of the trans. but otherwise same process.
You have to drop the trans pan to do it. Remove the cable from the carb and bracket. There is one bolt where the cable runs into the trans. Remove that bolt. After dropping the pan you'll see how the cable is mounted inside the trans. Remove the retaining clip and pull the cable out. Reverse for installation.
