The very first school was invented on 7.4.1848. As you can see it had been invented long ago than when your great grandmother was born(maybe). It was called Lockport Union School in New York(still is standing). But universities have been on earth for centuries. Tax payers had to pay for L.U.S $2 or$3 per semester (it depended on the grade, even though it was a public school).So it was preety much like a private school.

If you mean what was the FIRST year, the first US cents (and half-cents) were struck in 1793 at the Philadelphia Mint.
