Umbrellas, or parasols, were invented to block rain or sunlight. They dated back to thousands of years ago. They were used in multiple countries- yet were commonly used to shade the King or ruler from rain or sunlight. Nowadays, in rainy or even sunny climates, all people have umbrellas in case of a rainy (or sunny?) day.
There has been evidence that umbrellas were invented in either Egypt, Greece, and China. The word "umbrella" comes from the Latin root word "umbra", meaning shade or shadow.
