Who invented the Melissa virus?

Melissa was written by David L. Smith in Aberdeen Township, New Jersey. It was named after a Miami stripper that David met. It was a macro virus, which is a programming language built into a larger program that automates tasks - one macro can format an entire document and share contents with other files. It was first discovered on March 26, 1999. The virus had infected 100,000 computers within 3 days. It spread by arriving as an email with an infected Word document attached. When opened it sent an email to the first 50 entries in a victims email address book. It shut down Internet mail systems that got clogged with infected emails coming from the virus.
