Jupiter now has 63 confirmed moons. The first four moons (and the largest) were discovered in 1610 by Galileo Galilei. These moons were also the first objects to be discovered that were orbiting around another body that wasn't the Earth or the Sun.

Galileo Galilei discovered the four largest moons of Jupiter (there are more than four). They're still referred to as the "Galilean moons" to distinguish them from the other smaller moons of Jupiter and they can be easily seen in even a fairly modest telescope.

It was Galileo in the early 1600s who first used a telescope to study the night-sky scientifically and he discovered the four big 'Galilean' moons of Jupiter. They can be seen through a small telescope like a 2" refractor with a magnification of 40-50.

I don't know who invented the first telescope, but I do know that Galileo Galilei discovered the 4 moons. That's why they're called te Galileian Moons (I hope that's how you spell it).
