The members of ABBA first performed together in 1970 and released their first single and album in 1972. The name "ABBA" was an acronym derived from the group's members, Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, as well as Agnetha Faltskog, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The name was first used in the summer of 1972. ABBA last performed together in public in December of 1982 and its last singles were released in 1983.
ABBA is one of the most successful pop acts of all time, and is the second-best selling band behind only The Beatles. Universal Music certified in 2010 that ABBA has sold over 375,000,000 records and still sells about 5,000,000 each year.
Andersson and Ulvaeus have written over one hundred songs and were years ahead of their time - even today their songs aren't very dated, especially compared to their peers of the era. At least forty ABBA singles charted around the world between 1972 and 1983 and 21 of them reached number one in at least one country.
ABBA was inducted into the Rock and Roll of Fame in 2010 as the first European act to achieve massive international success. They were also pioneers of the music video. A stage musical based on ABBA's music, Mamma Mia!, first opened in London in 1999 and on Broadway in 2001. It is still playing in both places, and in many other countries, and is now one of the most successful musical plays of all time. A film version released in 2008 is the highest-grossing musical film to date.
