Known as "The Emperor" on set, Akira was a Japanese director and filmmaker who is in large part, responsible for the rise of Samurai movie popularity.

  • His most famous film Rashomon (1951) stars Toshiro Mifune (a recurring actor who rose to fame by Akira's films)
  • Akira originally tried his luck at painting, educated at the Academy of Fine Arts, but his painting attempts were consistently unsuccessful.
  • He only entered the filmworld after he won an essay contest on the major weaknesses of Japanese cinema
  • Many of Kurosawa's samurai films have been turned into westerns, including Seven Samurai and Yojimbo
  • George Lucas has said that his film Star Wars was inspired by Kurosawa's film The Hidden Fortress.
