Alex Joseph was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) for about four years, between 1965 and 1969. After this he left the Mormon church to join a fundamentalist polygamist religious group in Montana, which he was soon kicked out of for marrying four women of different religions (two Catholics, a Methodist, and a Presbyterian) without the consent of the group's leader. He went on to form his own polygamist religious group called the Confederate Nations of Israel and founded the city of Big Water in Utah.
