Dame Beryl Margaret Bainbridge was an English author.
She was born in Liverpool, England on the 21st November 1932.
Beryl Bainbridge is most known for her works of psychological fiction, which she often set amongst the working classes.
She won the Whitbread Award for best novel in 1977 and again in 1996. She was also nominated five times for the Booker Prize. In 2011 she was posthumously awarded a special honour specifically for her by the Booker Prize Committee.
She was appointed the title of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2000 by Queen Elizabeth II. And she was, in 2007, described as one of England's national treasures.
