Elphaba Thropp is the Wicked Witch of the West, although in the beginning of the musical we see she is just a normal girl attending college for the first time... apart from the fact that she is green. She is the sister of Nessarose Thropp, her crippled younger sibling, and the daughter of Frexpar Thropp, the governor of Munchkinland. When dropping the girls off at Shiz University, he gives Nessa (Nessarose) a pair of silver jeweled slippers which become the notorious ruby slippers. He gives Elphaba nothing but the parting words, "Try not to talk so much."

Elphaba was planning on rooming with Nessarose while at Shiz, but Madame Morrible, the headmistress thinks otherwise. She arranges for Nessa to stay with her and to find Elphaba a roommate of her own. She proceeds to wheel Nessa away. In a fit of rage, Elphaba throws out her hands and the chair comes hurtling back to her. It is revealed that she has magic powers that might even allow her to meet the wizard.

There is a lot more to the story, but that is just her background. We see that she is not so much Wicked as she is misunderstood, just like we see the Wizard is not so much wonderful as he is.. to put it simply, evil.

Is the wizard Elphaba's or Glinda's father in the musical Wicked?

No one is Elphaba Thropp's husband in either the book or the stage versions of 'Wicked'. She's in love with Prince Fiyero. In the original book version by Gregory Maguire [b. June 9, 1954], Fiyero is married unhappily to Sarima. But in the musical, he isn't married.

Why did Elphaba or The Wicked Witch of the West from Wicked set fire to Fiyero or Scarecrow in Wizard of Oz?

The play takes certain liberties with the source material. The book 'Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West' is more closely paired with the movie 'The Wizard of Oz' than the musical is. In the musical 'Wicked' Fiyero becomes the Scarecrow when Elphaba cast a spell for him to never die. In the book, Fiyero does not become the Scarecrow. I the movie, the Scarecrow has no connection to the witch prior to his travels with Dorothy.

Is wicked a musical group?

No.Wicked is both a Broadway musical and a novel.Trust me, the musical is easier to understand. Both the musical and the novel tell the story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before she became evil up untill her death.

What was the wicked witch's name in Wicked?

In Wicked there are really not any wicked witches, just misunderstood girls with magical powers. Elphaba is a college student who was born green and was loved by no one. Because of this, she was considered misunderstood. Being misunderstood and unloved gave her a bitter feeling and she became the Wicked Witch of the West. The Wicked Witch of the East is Elphaba's younger sister who was once paralyzed. Her name is Nessarose. She becomes wicked in an act of selfishness in trying to save her boyfriend from death. None of the typical witches are wicked. The wicked witch of the west is Elphaba is just missunderstood and that's what the whole musical is about. Then there is Nessarose who is Elphaba's sister but she is seen as the wicked witch of the east because she made a selfish descision to keep her love. Then of course there is Glinda, who isn't really Wicked but very selfish sometimes and a little bit self-centered.
