Jaq McCaughern'swork is highly textural, and he works in a variety of media, carved wood, glass, and gesso panels. Currently he is working on a series of large scale panels, inspired by images of the earth from outer space, which depicts the formation, erosion, eruption, and flow of land, rock, ice, and water, thus creating universal pattern and form. These panels are painted, gilded, patinated, and distressed. He will also be working on accompanying pieces of glass and carved wood. He originally studied historic decorative arts, and this is where he discovered the technique of "painting in relief", it is called 'raised gesso', and it was famously used by Margaret McDonald, in the Macintosh panels in Glasgow, although, he has changed the recipe, also the application is entirely contemporary, and, his own.
