The question has become popular again following the recent popularity of 'The daVinci Code'. It's not a new idea. There is no known credible evidence supporting this; however, there is no credible proof that it is not true. Careful scholarship and clear thinking would indicate caution; there is no need to develop any lines of thinking about this until more evidence comes to light.

Catholic AnswerYes, Our Blessed Lord has a wife, which, coincidentally, is His Body: His Wife (His Beloved) is His Spouse - the people of the Church. Remember that although Our Blessed Lord became incarnate in a human body, nevertheless, He was (and remains) GOD. He became human for no frivolous reasons, He became MAN to save all of mankind from everlasting damnation, and He spent every single moment of His life showing us what was important and how we should live to avoid casting ourselves into hell for eternity. As God He did not create the universe, create the angels, create men, and then subject Himself to the humiliation of becoming a man for any other reason than love of each of us and total self-giving that we see in His total passion and death on the cross. Keep in mind that Jesus was not just God, He was (and is) the Word of God, and He says, in Isaiah 55:8: "For my thoughts are not your thoughts: nor your ways my ways, saith the Lord." We do wrong, badly wrong, when we try to interpret God's way according to our lights - that view has Christianity completely upside down, we are supposed to interpret our ways according to God's lights!

No, He came to Earth to teach the gospel, not to marry His own creation. This world tells many lies...

CommentJesus didn't create anything, he just came and did magic tricks to make himself popular. AnswerIt has been suggested before that Mary Magdalene was His wife. It has also been suggested that, yes, He had to marry, else how could H be perfect?

The church has hidden allot of things from the public in the past so yeah one could think that he had a woman, plus I don't see why that will be strange. One more thing when Jesus was on earth 2000 years ago women where seen as inferior to man , maybe that explain why the church at it start didn't mention her.

Certain speculative works of fiction notwithstanding, there is no record of him having had one.

Answer

While its true that the cannonical biblical texts themselves do not openly state that Jesus ever had any sort of "serious" relationship with a woman, the "Gospel of Mary" has not been discredited on a historical basis (though traditional theologians disregard it out right). In addition, if we assume that the term "rabbi" as used by some of the disciples in reference to Jesus was used accurately (which is debateable), it would necessitate that Jesus be married.

No . Jesus was here for a specific purpose, and there was no room for a girlfriend in his mission on Earth.

It depends upon what you mean by the word 'girlfriend'. If you mean a friend who was female, then, yes, he had several. To name some, there were Mary and Martha in Bethany (a village near Jerusalem) with whom he stayed on several occassions along with their brother Lazarus. Mary Magdalene was also one of his close followers and it was to her that he first appeared after the resurrection. Add to these Salome, and others who were at the Cross witnessing Christ's execution, and countless females he had healed who followed him - and you could then say Jesus had several female friends.

If you mean, on the other hand, a girlfriend with whom he had a sexual (or at least intimate relationship) the answer is categorically no. In those days relationships between Jewish men and women were much more formal and prescriptive - an initial period of courtship, then a year's betrothal culminating in monogamous marriage. Don't forget that contraception was not available in those days and so sex invariably led to pregnancy. Pregnancy outside marriage was not only frowned upon, but it could label the woman as an adultress and would be severely punished. In his teachings Jesus upheld, more so even than the Jewish authorities, the sanctity of marriage. For Jesus a monogamous marriage for life was expected. It would be unthinkable for someone of Jesus' standing, authority and esteem to have a sexual relationship with a 'girlfriend' outside marriage and then preach the sanctity of marriage, especially as his appeal to the people was that he practised what he preached - unlike the Jewish Temple authorities. He would be just as much a hypocrite as those who eventually put him to death if he had done so.

There are those who claim that Mary Magdalene was his 'girlfriend', but there is not one shred of evidence that the relationship between Jesus and Mary was in any way sexual, but was platonic although it was a close relationship. To suggest anything else is not only blasphemous, but flies in the face of all the evidence of scripture and other historical and archaeological evidence, and shows a level of understanding of just who Jesus was that is quite infantile.

Answer 1

If you read The Bible and discover that Jesus was the Word of God and the Rock of the Old Testament, then yes, He was married to the Children of Israel - physical. Because of their stubbornness and sins against God's Law, He gave them a 'certificate of divorce' and scattered the Northern Kingdom and put the Southern Kingdom into Babylonian exile temporarily.

Jesus established His Father's Church of God (named about a dozen times in NT) and its members - disciples of Jesus - will be called to the marriage feast at the 2nd Coming. These are the firstfruits of God's 'harvest' and will be Jesus' 'bride' - spiritual.

No individual woman was married to Jesus.

Answer 2

This question is up for some debate. In the Church's cannon, i.e., the books of the Bible that were admitted as the Bible there is no evidence to support the idea, most recently and loudly put forth by Dan Brown, which is to say that Jesus married Mary Magdelene, however in the Bible there is nothing to support this contention. That being said there are Gnostic Gospels, which are books that were not submitted into the Bible including the books of Thomas and Mary Magdelene. In these non-cannon Gospels there is evidence to suppor that Jesus may have married. However there is nothing that requires one to believe that Jesus remained unmarried through his entire life, just like there is nothing requiring one to believe that Jesus did marry. It all comes down to whether one believes it or not. If one is persuaded by the idea that Jesus married, there is nothing that prevents one from still believing in Him.

Nothing is mentioned in the Bible about Jesus having a wife. Jesus is the Son of God. He is sinless.

Shouldn't the name Jesus Christ be Jesus the Christ?

That is a wonderful question, but the Bible does not use much punctuation, so in reality, speaking of the grammar, it is suppose to be written Jesus, Christ. not Jesus Christ. As many references in the KJV of the Bible, is Christ Jesus, written correctly Christ, Jesus, or Jesus, Christ. It is referring to Christ.
