There are a couple Josephs mentioned in the Book of Mormon. The most prominent is the son of a prophet named Lehi, who left Jerusalem with his family in 600 b.c. He later took over the roll of prophet after the death of his brother, Nephi, who inherited the position from his father. The Biblical Joseph who was sold into Egypt is also mentioned several times in the Book of Mormon.

What book did Joseph smith decipher and write?

You are probably thinking of the Book of Mormon. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called "Mormons") believe that Joseph Smith was lead to the place where metal plates were buried near his home by an angel. These plates were translated by the power of God and became the Book of Mormon. Later, Joseph Smith also translated some Egyptian papyri into what is now known as the Book of Abraham in the Pearl of Great Price. You can read the Book of Mormon, the Book of Abraham, and other Mormon scripture for free online by going to http://scriptures.lds.org.

What two religions have scripture from Gold Tablets delivered by an angel?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) believes that the Book of Mormon was written on golden colored (although not necessarily the metal gold) plates, delivered to the prophet Joseph Smith by the Angel Moroni. Joseph Smith then translated the plates by the power of God and published the writings as The Book of Mormon. Mormons use the Book of Mormon side-by-side with the Bible. Other religious groups which have broken off from the Mormon Church, such as the Community of Christ and the Apostolic United Brethren also use the Book of Mormon as scripture. You can learn more about the Book of Mormon at the "Related Links" below.

How long did it take for Joseph smith to translate the book of Mormon?

It all depends on your reading ability and what kind of attention you are giving to the book. The English language edition of the Book of Mormon is just over 500 pages. Although the text is quite small, it also includes many footnotes and cross references. I have heard of people reading through the Book of Mormon in a single day, although most people who are reading the Book of Mormon and carefully and prayerfully studying it as a work of scripture and the sacred word of God usually take a month to a year to complete it cover to cover. Many reading plans for the Book of Mormon are 100-day plans, with you reading about 5 pages a day. The fastest I have ever completed the Book of Mormon was two months, but I was also recording my thoughts and feelings in the margins as a read.

What languages did Joseph Smith study?

Joseph Smith didn't study languages- he had a third grade education, which offers proof that he didn't write the Book of Mormon himself; he wouldn't have been able to. After the publication of the Book of Mormon and the organization of the Church, Joseph Smith studied Hebrew, Greek, and German in order to make his translation of the Bible.
