Plasma is used to run almost all machinery in the Star Wars universe, from starships to lighting, and Naboo is teeming with plasma and has major mining operations to extract it.Reluctantly, Veruna signed a contract with the Trade Federation, which was a large, multi-system and powerful bloc within the Republic (and which holds a seat in the Senate). This contract stipulated a fixed price for the plasma that turned out to be too low, so the Trade Federation was making a lot of money reselling the plasma at a markup. This displeased the ethical Naboo, and Veruna then tried to get out of the contract that he had not wanted to sign in the first place.Anticipating military action, Veruna expanded the volunteer armed forces of Naboo--but he had to resign from office because of this because the peaceful Naboo objected to it. On taking office after Veruna, Queen Amidala assured the Naboo she would resolve the dispute without resorting to military action, and she initiated negotiations with the Trade Federation to either terminate the plasma contract or agree to a higher price. However, the increase in military spending by Naboo worried the paranoid Trade Federation, which was also reluctant to give up a contract that guaranteed them so much money.At the same time, the Senate had passed legislation taxing trade routes to outlying systems such as Naboo to pay for security along those routes, which were subject to pirates and the like. The Trade Federation had wanted the Republic to improve security without a tax, and thus was offended at the tax and felt threatened. In response to the tax, the Trade Federation blockaded Naboo to force Naboo to give in--and ideally to actually join the Trade Federation and thereby relinquish its seat in the Senate.Behind the scenes, however, the Trade Federation was being manipulated by the powerful Sith lord, Darth Sidious, who as it turns out was also Senator Palpatine--Naboo's delegate to the Galactic Senate.Star Wars: Episode I--The Phantom Menace focuses on this dispute because this dispute ends up exposing Anakin Skywalker, "The Chosen One," to the Jedi and to Obi-Wan Kenobi specifically (and draws him to Sidious's/Palpatine's attention as well) and it introduces Anakin to Padme, whose royal name is Queen Amidala.
