Lord Voldemort is the main antagonist of the Harry Potter series. He is responsible for the deaths of Harry's parents, Lily and James Potter, along with many other characters. Immediately before the book begins he is defeated when attempting to kill Harry.

As the book progresses, it becomes clear that he is still alive and is trying to return to his natural form. At the end of the book Harry comes face to face with him and, once again, defeats him preventing his return.
