Unless the strip has gotten a lot more progressive than I remember it being, Olive Oyl didn't have a girlfriend; her boyfriend was originally Ham Gravy in Thimble Theatreand Popeye later transitioned into that role when he became the main character and especially after the strip/cartoons were renamed after him.You may perhaps be thinking of Alice the Goon, who was a "girl" (sort of, being that she was a female Goon) and a "friend" of Olive's (Alice even lived with Olive at one point, though nothing suggested the relationship was anything but platonic).
