He's an ancient Greek guy. What he did as an "astronomy scientist" is, mostly, screw up the science of astronomy for nearly two thousand years.
The Greeks were real big on coming up with things they thought ought to be true, and then assuming that they weretrue, and writing books based on that. Sometimes, they actually got it right (or at least close to right), but Ptolemy didn't have a particularly good track record in that regard.
Claudius Ptolemy, a Greco-Roman mathematician, astronomer, and geographer, is known for his influential works on geography and astronomy. His most famous treatise, the "Almagest," served as the authoritative work on astronomy for over a millennium.

Ptolemy.
Um... Ptolemy. Hence the name (the adjectival form is usually spelled "Ptolemaic", though). You're more generous than I am if you call him a "scientist," though.
Not much is known about Ptolemy's childhood, as historical records are limited. He was born in Egypt around 90 AD and came from a wealthy and influential family. It is believed that he received a well-rounded education, possibly including training in mathematics and astronomy that would later influence his work as a scientist.
