Who is Stephen?

He was a follower of Jesus. He was later stoned by Jews, while Saul (later called Paul) was holding their clothes. He is considered to be the first Christian martyr. Right before he dies though, he sees Jesus sitting in heaven, and they say Stephen's was as britght as an angels.

Stephen is mentioned in Acts of the Apostles, which portrays him as having been chosen as an early deacon, after which he appears to have been the first Christian martyr.

However, Shelly Matthews says in a 2007 paper that Stephen's martyrdom fails on several criteria to qualify as historical. Raymond E. Brown says in An Introduction to the New Testament, we can never verify the existence and martyrdom of Stephen. On these views, supported by many other New Testament scholars, there was probably no St Stephen.

He was chosen as one of the leaders in the early church, and then stoned to death by some of the Jews. While being stoned, he said he saw he heavens open, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
