Tamened was the chief of a clan. This clan was one of the many that made up named Lenni-Lanape. He played a leading role in promoting peace between Indian tribes. He was also known as Tammany or Tammamend. He was the Patron Saint of America.
The exact location of his birth and the location of his own village is unknown, but it was somewhere in the area where Philadelphia was later established. Perhaps it was at or near the Delaware village of Shackamaxon. Even his name is a matter of debate, since it was variously recorded as Tammany, Tamenend, Tamammend, Tamanend and many other spellings - said to mean "agreeable" in the Lenni-Lenape (Delaware) language.
Tamenend, also known as Tammany, was a prominent Native American chief of the Lenape (Delaware) tribe during the 17th century. He is often remembered for his role in fostering peaceful relations between Native Americans and European settlers, particularly the English. Tamenend's legacy is sometimes symbolized by the Tammany Society, a political organization in early American history that adopted his name to represent principles of democracy and native rights. His efforts highlighted the importance of diplomacy and cooperation during a period of significant upheaval and change.
