There are two possible answers depending on what you mean - and only differentiated by whether you are using it as a title or not.
THE evangelists is a way of referring to the authors of the four historical accounts of Jesus' life, death and resurrection which are now commonly called the Gospels. They were Matthew, John (who was commonly called Mark), Luke and John. Thus, sometimes you might hear people refer to them using this title. This is particularly the case for 'St. John the Evangelist' to distinguish him from 'St. John the Baptist'.
AN evangelist is a later New Testament development with Paul's letters. It refers to a gift of God's spirit which enables people to proclaim the good news of Jesus. Thus, Paul tells his protege Timothy to 'do the work of an evangelist' (2 Timothy 4:5). By this he means for Timothy to tell others, both those who are followers of Jesus and those who aren't, about the good news of Jesus.
