William Henry Johnson was an artist during the Harlem Renaissance. He helped make people happy when in troubled times. William Henry Johnson was born on March 18 in the year of 1901, in a little town called Florence, South Carolina. His father was a wealthy white man who was well known in Florence. Johnson's birth father left Johnson and his mother when Johnson was born. Johnson mother was black and Sioux Indian. Johnson's step father was a black man. Johnson's mother got married to the man. Together they had two boys and two girls. There names was not revealed. Johnson taught himself how to draw by copying the comics in the newspaper. By the age of fife-teen Johnson had perfected his hand accuracy. Since slavery was over Johnson's mother choose to work for the white people. She cooked, cleaned, ironed there clothes, paint. She did everything to get some money so her and her family could eat. Johnson was an art educator. He was well known for his fine art work. He made a living off the art he sold. Some of Johnson's art were named "Young Pastry Chef," "Flowers in a Blue Vase," and "Deep South." One special place where Johnson's work was commemorated was a museum in Washington. Johnson was diagnosed with syphilis. Johnson knew he was on his death bed so he gave all his stuff away. He gave all his money to his bothers and sister. He gave all his highly valuable art work to his wife. He met her in a town called Caghes and together they went back to Denmark and got married there.
