the pope made many laws, as did kings. any nobility could do just about whatever they wanted with lawbreaking serfs who were in their domain. unfortunately medieval laws were unfair and the punishments for miner crimes could be branding, beatings/whippings, having your house/field/possessions destroyed, and even death. many times innocent people were convicted because they were not given fair trials and were simply accused and punished.
