Humans abuse animals out of ignorance. It's really about even whether pets or wild animals are abused more. Wild animals are hunted, or have their habitat destroyed so they starve, or are harmed "for fun" by people who can't understand why it is wrong. Pets are usually abused because people think it would be fun to have a pet, and don't understand that a pet is just as much work as raising a human child. So they ignore the pet, or beat it, because they don't understand.
