Ahaziah was king of Israel and the son of Ahab and Jezebel. William F. Albright has dated his reign to 850 BC-849 BC, while E. R. Thiele offers the dates 853 BC-852 BC. The author of the Books of Kings criticized him for following the ways of his father Ahab. During his reign the Moabites revolted from under his authority (2 Kings 3:5-7). This event is recorded on the Mesha stele, an extensive inscription written in the Moabite language. He united with Jehoshaphat in an attempt to revive maritime trade by the Red Sea, which proved a failure (2 Chronicles 20:35-37). His messengers, sent to consult the god of Ekron regarding his recovery from the effects of a fall from the roof-gallery of his palace, were met on the way by Elijah, who sent them back to tell the king that he would never rise from his bed (1 Kings 22:51; 2 Kings 1:18). Ahaziah of Judah was king of Judah, and the son of Jehoram and Athaliah, the daughter (or possibly sister) of king Ahab of Israel. He is also called Jehoahaz (2 Chronicles 21:17; 25:23). He took the throne at the age of 42 in the years of the House of Ahab but he was biologically 22 years old (2 Chronicles 22:2) (many scholars take the 42 years of 2 Chronicles 22:2 as a copyist's error for an original 22 years, as in 2 Kings 8:26; some Greek and Syrian manuscripts of 2 Chronicles 22:2 give 22 years). William F. Albright has dated his reign to 842 BC, while E. R. Thiele offers the date 841/840 BC.[1] As explained in the Rehoboam article, Thiele's chronology for the first kings of Judah contained an internal inconsistency that placed Ahaziah's reign one year after his mother Athaliah usurped the throne. Later scholars corrected this by dating these kings one year earlier,[2][3] so that Ahaziah's dates are taken as one year earlier than Thiele's in the present article. Under the influence of his mother Athaliah, he introduced forms of worship that offended the Yahwistic party.

In Judah, Jehoram, son of Jehoshaphat reigned for at least seven years and Jehoram's son Ahaziah for less than a year. This means that Ahaziah and Jehoram ruled Israel for about eight years, and also that Jehoram and Ahaziah ruled Judah during approximately the same eight years.The duplication of the names, even if in reverse order, is startling and has led to speculation that Judah was really under Israelite rule for this period, which the southern scribes were unwilling to acknowledge.
