Amon (this is actually how you spell it) is the main antagonist in the first season. He is a masked man who wants to rid the world of the "impurity" of bending. He is the leader of the anti-bending revalution and leads the group of chi-blockers known as the Equalists. He is able to take away a bender's abilities permanently, much like Aang did to Fire Lord Ozai in the original series, but no one knows how he learned or got this incredible ability. When he was younger, a firebender extorted his family of non-benders. The firebender eventually killed his family and "took his face". Hence he has been "forced to hide behind a mask ever since".
