On March 15, 1901, Dita Hopkins Kinney (1849-1921) was appointed the first Superintendent of the United States Army's newly-formed Nurse Corps (female). Hence, Kinney was the first female U.S. Army officer. The U.S. Navy later established its Nurse Corps (female) in 1908. Her gravestone at Trinity Church Cemetery & Mausoleum in New York City gives her birth year as 1849, although several other published sources state her birth year as 1854 and 1855.
