Originally, the space was not meant to be a place for those to come and remember the deceased, but as a living memorial to honor America's first president, George Washington. Ever since William Christman, the first soldier to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery, it has been sanctioned off as a resting place for brave men and women who have died for our country. Arlington's official site rightfully boasts that it is "our nation's most hollowed ground." It is the final resting place for our country's brave protectors. As to why people should visit this National site, the list could go on and on. For many, it's symbolic and shows the many Americans who have fought and died for this country. For others, it's more personal. They go to see their loved ones who are now at peace. These are a few of the many reasons, not to mention its hauntingly beautiful landscape that will give you chills, especially near the Tomb of the Unknowns where the silence and tranquility is astonishing.

When it was first observed on May 30, 1868, three years after the Civil War ended it was called Decoration Day because the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers who were buried at Arlington National Cemetery were decorated with flowers.
