While it WAS signed into law by President Grover Cleveland, the general secretary of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America and co-founder of the American Federation of Labor's Peter J. McGuire was first to suggest a day to honor the American worker.

This is in dispute, however, by the International Association of Machinists, whose Matthew Maguire is alleged to have propsed the holiday while serving as a secretary to the Central Labor Union in New York in 1882.

Let's just enjoy the day off from work and celebrate with a nice barbecue!
