If you mean do elephants always beat their predators, the answer is yes, unless that predator is man. Elephants are the biggest land animal so its size helps to protect it against all other animals except man. The elephants young may not survive an attack by predators as well as their adults do, but the adult elephants come together as a family herd to help protect their young.
Under most circumstances, horses and elephants do not wear armor, but when they do wear armor, they do so for exactly the same reason that people wear armor. Since horses and elephants have both been used to carry soldiers in times of war, or to attack an enemy, they too require protection against the spears, arrows, or other weapons that might be used against them.

The elephants were war elephants and were brought to use them to attack the Roman armies, not to cross the Alps, which was a difficult feat for these animals which were gigantic and from very hot climates. Most of his elephants (if not all of them) died while crossing the Alps in the snowy winter.
