Mario is not fat. In the original game he was a 2D transparent Sprite made out of 2 16x16 tiles. Nintendo figured out he would look ugly if he was 3 in² or 6 in². This leeched into newer Mario games and therefore with the high resolution of such games, giving off the idea that he is overweight and sometimes obese. In real life, he would probably be more like a little person.
